WACSOF Condemns Coup in Burkina Faso.

It is with dismay that we, members of the West African Civil Society Forum (WACSOF) have learned the coup in Burkina Faso perpetrated by the elements of the Presidential Security Regiment (RSP) while the transitional government was about to engage in the presidential election campaign scheduled for 11 October 2015. This act, no doubt, jeopardizes all the gains of the transition and seriously compromises the process of restoring peace and the rule of law in Burkina Faso.

The West African Civil Society Forum (WACSOF) condemns this unjustifiable and destabilising act and demands that the transitional Government be restored without delay so that the transition process can be completed with the organization of free, transparent and credible elections.

WACSOF appeals to the international community, particularly to ECOWAS not tolerate the interruption of the electoral process already defined.

The return to normal constitutional order is imperative not only for Burkina Faso but also for the West African region that desperately needs peace and stability.

WACSOF recommends that:

 - The ECOWAS should without delay send a high-level mediation mission for the repositioning of the transitional Government that was put in place and enforce appropriate sanctions as appropriate in similar situations;;

- The African Union and the United Nations which constitute the Joint Chairmanship of the International Support Group for the Transition in Burkina Faso (GISAT-BF) should continue to demand the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of General Diendéré and colleagues.

WACSOF expresses its solidarity to Burkinabe people and urgently appeals to all the Burkinabe civil society, the Political Class of the country and to all democrats of the West African region to mobilize to counter the actions of the Presidential Security Regiment to restore the republican institutions.

WACSOF rejects all forms of violence against civilians and reiterates its commitment to peace, security and respect for human rights.
